where tired mom's come together

Keyword Research Changed Everything for Me on Pinterest (And I Wish I Learned This First)

When I first started using Pinterest, I thought it was all about making pretty pins. I spent so much time picking fonts, choosing colors, and trying to make everything look aesthetic. And while that part is fun and important, I quickly learned something that changed everything for me.

Keywords matter more than I ever realized.

Keyword research is honestly the secret sauce of Pinterest. It is what helps people actually find your content instead of it just floating around in the Pinterest universe with no direction. I like to think of keywords as little breadcrumbs that lead the right people straight to your blog or your products.

And the best part is Pinterest basically gives you the answers if you know where to look.

Pinterest Is the First Place I Go for Keyword Research

The first place I learned to do keyword research was directly on Pinterest itself. I didn’t need fancy tools or complicated software. I just started typing words into the Pinterest search bar that matched what I was writing about.

For example, if I was creating content about making money online or passive income, I would type in something like “passive income” and watch what Pinterest suggested next.

Suddenly I would see things like
passive income ideas
passive income from home
passive income for moms
passive income streams

Those suggestions are not random. Pinterest shows you exactly what people are searching for in real time. That was a huge lightbulb moment for me.

Now before I make a pin or write a blog post, I always spend a few minutes in the search bar just seeing what pops up. It helps me understand what people are actually looking for instead of guessing.

Learning From What Other Pins Are Doing Well

Another thing I started doing was paying attention to other pins in my niche. Not to copy them, but to learn from them.

I searched for topics I was already writing about and clicked on the pins that had lots of saves or looked like they were doing well. I noticed patterns in the words they used in their titles and descriptions.

Things like
Pinterest tips for beginners
make money online
work from home mom
side hustle ideas
blogging tips

It helped me realize that the words I used mattered just as much as the design. I could have the prettiest pin, but if I wasn’t using words people were searching for, it wasn’t going to go anywhere.

So I started creating my own list of keywords that felt like me and fit my content, but were also searchable.

I Keep a Running Keyword List Now

Once I started gathering keywords from Pinterest search and from looking at similar pins, I made myself a simple list. Nothing fancy. Just writing in my notebook or a notes app on my phone where I add ideas as I go.

This isn’t something I do once and forget about. I treat it like an ongoing project. Pinterest changes, trends change, and what people search for changes too.

I use this list when I write
pin titles
pin descriptions
board names
board descriptions
and even a few hashtags

Pinterest does use hashtags, just not like Instagram. I usually use a few that match my main keywords instead of stuffing a bunch in.

This Is When My Strategy Started to Make Sense

Before I understood keywords, I felt like I was just throwing pins out into the world and hoping something would stick. Once I started using keyword research, it felt like I finally had direction.

Instead of saying
“Here’s my blog post”

I was saying
“Here’s a blog post about Pinterest tips for beginners”
or
“Here’s how tired moms can make money online with Pinterest”

It became more intentional. More clear. More helpful for the person searching.

Keywords helped me stop creating just for myself and start creating for the person on the other side of the screen.

What I Would Tell Another Beginner Mom Like Me

If you’re just starting Pinterest and feeling overwhelmed, this is what I would say.

You do not need to be perfect.
You do not need fancy tools.
You just need to start paying attention to words.

Use the Pinterest search bar.
Look at what is already working.
Keep a list.
Use those words in your titles and descriptions.

That alone can change everything.

This is still something I’m learning and practicing every week, but it has already helped me feel more confident and more focused in what I’m creating.

And honestly, it makes Pinterest feel less like a guessing game and more like a plan.

In Conclusion..

Keyword research is not about gaming the system. It’s about understanding people. It’s about meeting someone exactly where they are when they type something into that search bar.

For me, this was the moment Pinterest stopped feeling random and started feeling possible.

I’m still learning. I’m still testing. But now I know that every pin I make has a purpose.

And that alone has made this journey feel worth it.

I hope this helps someone else 🙂

Love, Kylie
